Volunteers Week is upon us and this week we will be recognising all the local volunteers and their respective organisations. The Sydenham Improvement Group is a local residents association, which has become a central part of improving and fostering a solid community spirit in Sydenham, Bridgwater. The volunteers there have helped run, organise, and support a number of events and initiatives, including the local food pantry, a Christmas lunch for local families, tree planting, litter picks, to name a few. Hands of Change in Burnham and Highbridge was founded by a group of volunteers in 2017 and has been hard at work helping hundreds of people struggling with putting food on the table and gaining access to household items such as new clothes or bedding. The Hub at Bridgwater is a volunteer run organisation led by our 2022 Star of The Year Award Winner, John. The group helps to support homeless people and help those who in need of moving into new accommodation. Getting Involved! 📢 There are lots of ways you can get involved with us at Homes in Sedgemoor. From volunteering on our Sedgemoor Tenants Assurance Committee and ensuring customer voices are being heard, to becoming a Neighbourhood Champion and supporting your local community, we have something for you! “As a customer of HIS with time on my hands I responded to a text asking for volunteers to join a customer group, led by two staff members, aimed at getting customers involved in passing on their experiences of their landlord HIS & their staff& how volunteers can help .
“Although I worked for local government for over 20 years this type of involvement was to me something new.
“I attended the first meeting & was immediately accepted & welcomed by everyone there. It is now 8 months later & I am still enjoying the different aspects of the Enabling Group which looks at HIS Board strategy for the the coming 3 years, Risk Assessment of all properties, repairs, reporting repairs, voids (properties empty & being repaired prior to being relet). The meetings are held monthly, full of interest, some humour but for me extremely worthwhile.”
