A £4million pound project for 14 affordable new rental homes in Bridgwater is nearing completion.
The investment was made by Sedgemoor District Council, before the creation of a unitary authority, for four redundant council-owned former lock-up garage sites in the Sydenham area of the town to be transformed into new homes, which will be managed by Homes in Sedgemoor.
The four sites are Chamberlin Avenue, Avalon East, Avalon West and Saxon Green. The proposed contract competition is planned for 25th August 2023. Electricity and water is now connected at Chamberlin Avenue and is scheduled for the other three sites.
As the demand for garages dropped, Homes in Sedgemoor noticed that these underused sites could be repurposed.
Projects such as this involving building homes on the brownfield unused sites and recycling already owned land is a key part of the future Homes in Sedgemoor housing development plans. These plans will also see underused and neglected areas revitalised, whilst removing the risk and issues associated with such unused parcels of land.
This project has already provided funds towards the Council’s refurbishment of the Chamberlin Avenue play area adjoining one of the sites.
The developments will deliver 14 highly efficient new homes, in four small pockets, including a home designed to meet the needs of a family with a specific housing need.
Duncan Harvey, leading the Housing Development Team for Homes in Sedgemoor said: It is amazing to see the progress being made building these new homes. It only seems like yesterday that we were celebrating the start of construction. Not only are we putting redundant land to better use, we will also be helping to tackle the demand for high quality affordable homes. We hope these new homes will make a positive and life changing impact on the new residents when they move in. Somewhere safe, somewhere affordable and somewhere a family can call home.”
