Independent investigation launched after roof damage

An independent investigation has been launched and repair work is underway following roof damage at a block of flats in Bridgwater.

On Saturday, December 7, a section of roof at Westfield Close, which is managed by Homes in Sedgemoor, was damaged during Storm Darragh, which brought winds of around 90mph to parts of the country.

The damage resulted in a number of customers having to move into temporary accommodation. Debris from the damage also temporarily closed Albert Street, which has since been reopened.

Work is now underway to establish what caused the damage to the roof, which was installed in Spring/Summer 2024.

Peter Hatch, Chief Executive at Homes in Sedgemoor, said: “I am happy to confirm that an independent investigation has been launched to identify what caused the damage to the roof at Westfield Close during Storm Darragh. Once we have the findings, we will be able to put a full repairs programme in place as a matter of urgency to fix the damage.

“In the meantime, scaffold has been constructed around the block and our primary contractor, MD Group, is working hard to temporarily repair the roof to ensure it is fully watertight. Once this work has been carried out, customers currently staying in temporary accommodation will be able to return home.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to all our customers who have been affected by the roof damage for your support and cooperation throughout this process.”

Following the damage, Homes in Sedgemoor has been in regular contact with all customers affected and will continue to do so until work to repair the roof is complete.
